Start with 4 different color highlighters and choose different ones mark the following as you read (color code):

1. Setting (Time and Place) - Highlight all places in the text that provide details about the setting.
2. Imagery - Highlight details that bring the setting to life. What words paint the picture in your head?
3. Conflict 1: Person vs. Nature - Highlight anything that describes dangerous places or natural phenomena
4. Conflict 2: Person vs. Self - Highlight anything that describes the main character's internal experience, including childhood growth, pride, and his relationship with his mother.
